The legend 67on the 68coin, 69K'ai Yuan Tung Pao translates as "precious currency of the K'ai Yuan 70era". 71The Tang Dynasty was a brilliant period in Chinese history. 72It 73was 74an era of great prosperity and artistry. The K'ai 75Yuan coin 76continued to be issued for the next 300 years, until the collapse of 77the 78Dynasty in 907AD. During much of the dynasty the 79coin was 80the 81only denomination struck. Because of the relatively low value 82of 83the coin and the high level of commerce a LOT of the coins were issued 84during that period. (Think of doing all your transactions with only 85pennies!) 86As a result the coin, though over 1000 years old, is still plentiful 87and 88inexpensive. 89</p> 90<p>The Chinese used the basic design of a round copper coin with 91a 92square 93hole for over 2100 years. The roundness of the coin 94represented 95heaven, 96while the square hole represented the earth, thus their coins were the 97perfect mix of heaven and earth. A more practical reason for 98the 99design is that the coins were cast. In order to remove the 100casting 101spurs on the coins, a square stick was run through the center hole of a 102group of coins in order to hold them. The spurs could then be 103quickly 104and easily sanded off the whole group of coins 105</p> 106<p>The origin of our use of the K'ai Yuan coin as a logo is 107deeply 108shrouded 109in the hidden mysteries of the past. I adopted the 110logo at a time when a substantial part of our business was 111dealing with Chinese cash coins. However after 112selling coins for over fifty years I cannot remember exactly why it was 113choosen.
