In India there are 22 languages, which have been referred to as scheduled languages and given recognition, status and official 2 encouragement. 96.71 percent of the population in the country has one of the 22 scheduled languages as their mother tongue. Several students undergo their schooling in their regional 3 language and may face challenges transitioning to English for technical education. Translation of NPTEL content is expected to ease this transition and assist students in more 4 effectively utilizing the best technical content in India.</p> <p class="svelte-zwu798">NPTEL has initiated translation of course content into 11 different languages - Assamese, Bengali, Gujarati, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, Marathi, Odia, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu. As of 5 now, NPTEL has received 1500+ requests from the learners to provide the translation of course contents. The translated contents are reviewed before being made available for learners. 6 Evaluation of the translated content is further carried out with the help of learners who make use of this facility. Learners can give feedback and rating for each translation made on 7 NPTEL. This innovative workshop was highly successful, 12 offering valuable insights and strategies to greatly enhance the efficiency of machine transcription and translation.</p> <p class="svelte-zwu798">Traditionally, translating NPTEL course lectures has been a labor-intensive process. Translators manually type the content, which subsequently undergoes review by a Quality Check person 13 who provides feedback, further prolonging the completion time for translations.</p> <p class="svelte-zwu798">Subsequently, two in-house machine translation tools, TransLingua and Chitralekha, were developed to streamline the translation process by generating machine-translated content. Despite 14 this, translators were hesitant to use these tools, preferring to manually translate the video lectures.</p> <p class="svelte-zwu798">The workshop aimed to encourage the use of these tools and to collect feedback from the users, facilitating adjustments to better cater to the needs of translators. This workshop was 15 organized under the expert guidance of Prof. Abhijit P Deshpande (Faculty, Department of Chemical Engineering, IIT Madras), Prof. Rajesh Kumar (Faculty, Department of Humanities and Social 16 Sciences, IIT Madras), and Ms. Bharathi (Manager, NPTEL).</p> <p class="svelte-zwu798">The workshop participants were primarily academicians from various institutes across the country, each with proven experience in translating technical content from English into several 17 regional languages. Over the two-week period, twenty-three participants translated video lectures from English into eight regional languages. Additionally, eight members from the 18 development teams of both tools also took part in the workshop.</p> <h2 class="underline-span1 svelte-zwu798">The Machine Translation Process</h2> <picture><source type="image/avif"/><source type="image/webp"/><source type="image/jpeg"/><img alt="Flow chart" width="850" height="415" class="svelte-zwu798"/></picture> <p class="svelte-zwu798">Though each of the above steps is machine-generated, the possibility of errors makes human intervention inevitable.</p> <p class="svelte-zwu798">During the workshop, the translators used both tools to translate video lectures from English to regional languages following the model outlined above.</p> <p class="svelte-zwu798">In the first week, the development teams of both tools received continuous feedback from the users, necessitating simultaneous deployments. This resulted in users taking approximately four 19 hours to translate one hour of video lectures.</p> <p class="svelte-zwu798">During the second week, as the tools became more user-friendly, the volume of feedback gradually decreased. By the end of the workshop, participants noticed significant improvements in 20 both the time required and the quality of translations.</p> <p class="svelte-zwu798">Regarding time, users were able to translate one hour of video lectures in about two hours. As for quality, users observed substantial improvements, particularly with technical terms. 21 Initially, technical words were often translated literally, but by the end of the workshop, they were being transliterated correctly. Equation handling is another challenging aspect that will be 29 addressed by the tool teams. Additionally, the teams will focus on enhancing the scaling and security of the tools.</p> <p class="svelte-zwu798">Our goal is to complete 10,000 hours of translation within the next six months with the help of these trained translators.
