109
Hood Canal Environmental Council Grant Program

110
The Hood Canal Environmental Council is pleased to announce the
111 launch of a new HCEC Grant Program, designed to support projects that
112 advance the protection, restoration, and long-term resilience of the
113 Hood Canal watershed.
Hood Canal is one of Washington State’s most ecologically significant
114 marine ecosystems. Yet persistent environmental challenges - including
115 low dissolved oxygen events, nutrient loading, stormwater runoff,
116 shoreline development impacts, climate-related stressors, and other
117 human activities - continue to threaten water quality, marine
118 biodiversity, salmon habitat, shellfish resources, and the related parts
119 of the fragile marine ecosystem that depends on them.
To harness the wisdom and skills of our surrounding community, we have
120 created this grant program to recognize and reward projects that help
121 meet these challenges.
122
Key Highlights

123
Open to all: Individuals, organizations, schools, and community groups
124 are welcome to apply.

125
Flexible criteria: Nominations may honor past performance, while
126 proposals may outline new proposed plans.

127
Broad scope: Any subject that benefits Hood Canal - environmental,
128 cultural, or community - is eligible.

129

130
Grant guidelines, eligibility details, reporting expectations, and
131 submission deadlines will be provided upon inquiry.
132
You can submit your grant application here.
133
Together, we can protect and restore Hood Canal for future generations!

188
September, 2024 - Orcas are a remarkable sight anywhere,
189 anytime. The sound of Orcas blowing can make heads turn
190 instinctively. And with some luck, one can experience all this
191 together with the beauty of the Hood Canal and the majestic
192 Olympic Mountains in the background.

193
We have all heard or watched nature documentaries or seen
194 TikTok clips of people enjoying wildlife, sometimes too close
195 for comfort and human safety. Not only is this dangerous for the
196 people engaging in the activity and the wildlife, but it can
197 also cost you. Check out the list of violations on the link
198 below that can be reported and carry significant fines. Now
199 compare them to the photos we include of recent incidents that
200 include kayaks, boats and even a seaplane that flew, followed,
201 and landed by Orcas as they traversed.

202
Please enjoy nature mindfully, safely and within the
203 guidelines. In a recent development, starting in January 2025,
204 all boats will be required to stay at least 1,000 feet away from
205 any endangered orcas in Washington waters. Learn more and report
